The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

October 19th, 2022

Rating: 8.75/10

In 2017, the first game I ever put into my switch was the The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but I never finished it. Actually, if I’ll be honest with you guys, I never really got past the tutorial. Something about the game just immediately turned me off from it.

However, now in 2022, I decided to complete it, once and for all!

One of my biggest pet peeves with the “tutorial stage” was how empty it looked. Before anybody says anything “Max, it’s literally the tutorial, it’s supposed to be barren, you sound like that bozo who couldn’t get past the Cuphead tutorial”. Another thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the climbing and exploration that seemed to promote an excessive amount of grinding.

I finished the game about 2 days ago, and let me just say, I was wrong (about some things). This is probably the most refreshing switch game I have ever played. I’m five years too late to the party, I know that, but I really wish I stuck it out past the tutorial when I first played it. The music is phenomenally well made (and appropriate for the environment), and the combat has a good balance between stressful encounters and easy small skirmishes. The bosses were great, and Ganon (not a spoiler, cmon it’s Zelda, it’s always Ganon) was a surprisingly good boss. My favorite part about the game were the shrines. Wow, every single time I heard the radar beep at like 1 A.M. i was running around trying to find the shrine.

I did have a few issues though. While I loved the shrines, the world in between the shrines felt quite barren. I know, I know, critiques against this game are strictly prohibited, but I truly felt bored sometimes (I have around 35-ish hours on the game). At one point I didn’t have anything to do so I did 2 divine beasts (a story quest) in a row. The climbing also got very repetitive, very fast, and while I did love the exploration, the emptiness that I felt, made the game a drag sometimes… I’m pretty sure those are all my critiques, apologies again.

It’s a good game, don’t get me wrong. In fact, it’s a very good game. I still think Mario Odyssey is better though

Yours Truly
